Cell Counters

CELL COUNTERS

Cell counters are devices that measure the number and sometimes size of cells in biological fluids (blood, bone marrow, culture media, etc.). These instruments are widely used in clinical laboratories, research centers, and the biotechnology industry.

Main Applications:

  • Complete blood count (CBC) for erythrocyte, leukocyte and platelet enumeration

  • Bone marrow analysis

  • Cell culture studies (viability/cell density determination)

  • Sperm counting (in andrology labs)

Working Principles:

  • Electrical impedance (Coulter principle): Measures changes in electrical resistance

  • Optical methods (flow cytometry): Analyzes light scattering and fluorescence characteristics

  • Manual counting: Using hemocytometer (Neubauer chamber) under microscope

Advantages:

  • Much faster than manual methods (results within seconds)

  • High accuracy and reproducibility

  • Ability to measure multiple parameters simultaneously

Limitations:

  • Risk of erroneous results with abnormal cell morphology

  • High equipment costs
